Northern Thailand is a biker paradise with some of the most enjoyable and exhilarating riding available in the whole of South East Asia. This superb tour is a shorter version of our 10 day Northern Loop trip for those with slightly less time on their hands.

Join a group of like minded individuals from all over the world in sharing the natural beauty of the national parks, waterfalls, rice paddies, deep river valleys and soaring mountains abundant throughout this trip. Starting in Chiang Mai, we will be taking in the classic Mae Hong Son loop road through this remote and very beautiful, mountain border province. Great scenery and countless hairpin bends, combined with a liberal dose of rural Thai and hill tribe culture, make this an essential part of all our road tours.

We then follow the Burmese border north into the famous Golden Triangle, taking in the wonder of Chiang Dao National Park and staying in the ancient city of Chiang Rai along the way, before heading into the rarely visited and delightfully beautiful province of Nan, on the border with Laos. Its then back to Chiang Mai for a great meal and a celebratory night on the town.

As on all our road tours, we will be taking small back roads wherever possible, not only to provide the best riding, but to give you a genuine experience of real life in rural Thailand away from the tourist areas.

Sight seeing highlights include visits to Doi Inthanon, the highest mountain in Thailand and Doi Tung, an impressive peak on the Burmese border, a boat trip on the mighty Salawin River, the geological beauty of Chiang Dao Caves, a daytrip into the notorious golden triangle, great shopping opportunities and some amazing Buddhist temple sites.

If a non riding partner or friend would like to accompany you on the trip then they can travel in our luxury 4x4 vehicle (or people carrier depending on number of extra passengers). We will follow the same itinerary as the bikers, visiting the same sites, although the route will differ slightly.

Day 1: Arrive in Chiang Mai where you will be met at the airport and transferred to the hotel. Dinner and welcome drink at the Goodview Riverside restaurant. Briefing of week schedule.

Day 2: Chiang Mai to Mae Sarieng
Depart 8am heading southwest towards Doi Inthanon national park where we will visit the highest mountain in Thailand and take lunch. The spectacular winding roads of the Mae Hong Son Loop will take us to our final destination of the day Mae Sarieng, where we will stay at the attractive Riverside hotel on the banks of the River Sarieng (air conditioned room with cable TV and fridge). Thai style dinner taken at a quality local establishment.

Day 3: Mae Sarieng to Mae Hong Son
Light breakfast followed by departure at 8am for a 50km ride west to the village of Mae Sam Laap on the border with Burma, the two countries separated at this point by the mighty Salawin River. From here we leave the bikes for a boat ride upstream where we will stop for a BBQ lunch on one of the many huge beaches that line the riverbanks. We then return to our bikes and ride back to Mae Sarieng and further round this weaving mountain road northwards to Mae Hong Son itself. Tonight westay at a Northern Shan style resort in wooden bungalows amongst the rice paddies. Dinner at a renowned local restaurant.

Day 4: Mae Hong Son to Chiang Dao National park
Depart 8am continuing our journey along the loop through river valleys and paddy fields and over mountains, stopping at some great viewpoints and paying a visit to a Long-Necked Paduang village near the Burmese border, where the women wear brass rings around their necks to create the impression of elongation, which is considered beautiful. Of the 7000 Paduang thought to be resident in Burma, over 300 have fled to Thailand as refugees and now make a far better living from visiting tourists and are no longer in fear of their lives.

We arrive in the leisurely tourist town of Pai for lunch. Then a 150km ride through more exciting scenery to Chiang Dao National Park, home of Thailand’s third highest and most spectacular mountain. Here we will stay in charming bungalows dotted around a beautiful garden. Dinner at the fine guest house restaurant.

Day 5: Chiang Dao to Chiang Rai
Depart 8am for a visit to the nearby Chiang Dao cave complex, home to some superb cave formations. We then ride on to the beautiful town of Thaton for a riverside lunch. From here we head north into the Golden Triangle for a drive up the 1800m peak that is Doi Tung, providing us with spectacular views of both Burma and Thailand. An extremely steep descent takes us to Mae Sai, the most northerly point in Thailand and a bustling border town with a thriving market. Plenty of great deals to be had here. A short ride takes us to the city of Chiang Rai. Here we will spend the night at a resort on the outskirts of town in beautifully designed northern style bungalows dotted around a lush tropical garden and chemical free, saltwater pool. Dinner at the tastefully designed restaurant and bar where we will be treated to some fantastic Thai cuisine).

Day 6: Chiang Rai to Nan
Depart 8am riding east along the back roads through the hills towards the Laos border. From here we ride the rolling hills of Doi Phu Kha National Park, a stunning ride along the border with Laos, hitting altitudes of over 2000 metres and visiting a waterfall for a swim along the way. Various hill tribe settlements can be found along this road. We will arrive in historic Nan late afternoon, a town full of classic teak architecture and intricately decorated temples, staying in the town’s best hotel. Dinner will be a real treat tonight.

Day 7: Nan to Chiang Mai
Depart 8am for the last leg of the journey back to Chiang Mai avoiding the main roads wherever possible. We head straight to our luxury hotel on arrival to relax before heading out for the end of tour dinner at the prestigious Gallery restaurant. For those who want to continue the party we will head next door for some great live music in the Brasserie Bar. Or if you would prefer, there is the chance for some last minute shopping at the famous night bazaar.

Day 8: Wake up at your leisure, hopefully not too hung over, for a buffet breakfast.
Relax with a traditional Thai massage or join a trip to visit Doi Suthep, the large temple on the hillside overlooking the city. From here we can help you arrange extra nights in Chiang Mai or provide you with free transport to the airport to continue you holiday or fly home. Whatever your plans, this journey will leave you with experiences and memories you will never forget.

We will be sticking to this itinerary as closely as possible throughout the tour although we will not take any responsibility for changes to this schedule due to circumstances or events that we have no control over.
